5 Senior Summer Activities

1. Go to a Farmers Market

Not only is going to a local farmers market a good way to enjoy the summer weather, but you’re also supporting family farmers. As you walk around and explore, you’re getting lots of steps in which is a fun way to stay active and mobile. Check online to see if there are any local farmers markets near you or take a day trip with family or friends to a larger farmers market in a nearby city.

2. Try Variations of Yoga

Whether you want to join a class or do yoga on your own, this is the perfect way to reduce stress, strengthen your bones and alleviate aches and pains. If you decide to follow a video on your own, you can set your yoga mat outside and enjoy the sunshine in the meantime. There are also different variations of yoga – hot yoga, power yoga, vinyasa yoga, ashtanga yoga and many more.

3. Read Books Outdoors

If you have respiratory issues or require certain medical therapy like oxygen, yoga and walking for long distances might not seem appealing to you. Something you can do to enjoy the summer weather while resting and staying cool is to read your favorite book outside. This could be as simple as sitting on a chair on the deck, or you can visit a nearby park with shade. Reading will sharpen your focus, alleviate stress, broaden your knowledge and stimulate your brain all at once!

4. Go On an Assisted Walk

As you enter older age, you may realize your mobility slowing down a bit. That’s why many individuals opt for a cane, walker or wheelchair to help them get around safely and independently. Take advantage of these mobility aids and go on a walk around the neighborhood with a loved one while using your walker or another assistive device.

5. Swimming and Water Aerobics

One of the all-time best ways for seniors to enjoy the summer weather while still staying cool is to try out water aerobics. This activity builds strength from the gentle resistance of the water, relieves joint pain, improves heart and lung function and so many more benefits. If you don’t want to sign up for a water aerobics class, you can opt for visiting a nearby pool and taking laps to get some exercise in.

Getting fresh air and vitamin D from the sun are both important when it comes to an individual’s overall health and well-being. These activities are great for people of all abilities, so the next time you have a free day, spend it outdoors!
