Common Side Effects of Using a BiPAP Machine
Are you experiencing a dry nose? Or nasal congestion? If you’re a current user of a bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machine or you have been prescribed one, you may be wondering: are these side effects of using a BiPAP machine? How can I avoid them? We have the answers for you below. Keep reading to find out what the potential side effects are of using a BiPAP machine.
General Discomfort
Wearing a mask can sometimes cause general discomfort when you’re trying to sleep. At first, the mask may feel bulky and constraining, and the hose can get in the way of sleeping in certain positions other than your back. If the pressure of your sleep apnea equipment is set too high, it can also make exhaling uncomfortable.
Claustrophobia
For some patients, they may feel claustrophobic while wearing their BiPAP mask due to its snug fit around your nose. This feeling can worsen for those with a full-face mask that seals around your mouth and nose.
Dry Mouth
This is a common side effect of BiPAP therapy for those with full-face masks, as well as patients with nasal masks who breathe out of their mouths.
Sinus Congestion
Another common side effect is having a dry or stuffy nose. This happens because the air from the machine is being blown into your airway. The constant airflow can also cause nosebleeds.
Skin Irritation
If your mask is too tight, it can cause redness and indentation. To alleviate this symptom, try loosening the mask (but not too much). There are also mask liners you can use if the first option doesn’t help. It’s best to try another size or style of mask if this is occurring.
Mask Leakage
If your mask is loose, it will start leaking. This keeps the machine from providing you with the prescribed pressure and can affect your breathing. It’s important to have a mask that is sealed and properly fitted to your face.
Bloating
This symptom occurs from breathing in excess air, although it’s not as common as the rest. A bloated stomach can also cause aches, nausea and even vomiting.
If you’re experiencing any of these side effects, contact your healthcare provider about your symptoms. Often, adjustments can be made to alleviate some of the side effects, and they can get you a mask that is properly fitted to your nose and mouth.
