Bond with Your NIV Dependent Loved Ones This Holiday Season with These Tips

Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) is used to support breathing for patients with compromised respiratory function that could be caused by many different medical conditions. NIV offers a more comfortable option for your loved ones compared to invasive ventilation. The holidays may look different if you have a loved one in your family that has NIV and it is important to support and include them in your holiday festivities this season. We are going to share with you a few tips to help you bond and include your loved ones who have NIV.

1 Include Your Loved Ones in the Holiday Planning

Even though your family members are NIV dependent, it is important to make sure to include them in the planning of holiday activities. Maybe they get to pick different wrapping paper when you are wrapping presents or try to include them in the shopping or pick out the presents as well!

2 Bring the Holiday Fun to Them

Sometimes if your loved one is in the hospital or has in home care that prevents them from being able to attend holiday gatherings, it is a great idea to bring some holiday fun to them. Here are a few ideas:

  • Bring a puzzle to sit and do with them

  • Find a candle for them with their favorite holiday scent

  • Have family members write them a note and bring it to them

3 Allow Traditions to Evolve

Some holiday traditions that your family has done for years may not align with the abilities of your loved one with NIV. You might have to make changes to old traditions or come up with a few new traditions that are a better fit for everyone. Be open to these new traditions and collaborate with other family members to come up with a solution and plan activities that everyone can participate in! Here are a few holiday activity ideas:

  • Recipe Swap

  • Decorate for Christmas

  • Have a Holiday Party

  • Have a Christmas Movie Night

  • Listen to Christmas Music

  • Make a Holiday Craft

It is important to understand that your loved one with NIV is going to have new boundaries and the holidays may look different than they were in the past. Navigating the holidays with NIV can be challenging but make sure that you are asking your loved one questions and getting their input about the holiday plans, so that they are still being included. Try adding one (or a few) of these activities to your holiday plans this year! We hope that everyone has a fun and safe holiday season!
